Remarketing: What Message Should You Show People Who Know Your Company?

Message cards follow an illuminated path through three doorways.

Someone visited a service page and then left the website. That information does not reveal whether they liked it, intend to hire, or were researching for another company. Before creating a remarketing campaign, separate what was observed from the story the team imagines about the visit.

This guide concerns re-engagement messaging. The goal is to choose useful information for people with some previous contact with the offering without assuming purchase intent. Preparation involves creative work and media: a well-written piece also needs settings compatible with the intended audience.

Remarketing messages: start with the available signal

Google Ads describes using your data segments to re-engage people who previously interacted with your brand or services. Documentation presents different uses, such as website visitors and video interactions. These describe platform possibilities without guaranteeing every visitor can receive an ad. Google Ads: your data segments

In the agency conversation, ask for the signal to be explained in ordinary language. "Visited a particular page" differs from "requested a proposal." A prior interaction can guide a message hypothesis, but it does not justify writing as though the company knows what the person wants to do.

Also confirm what happened after the interaction. If customer service completed a request, a message insisting that someone begin it may no longer make sense. Planning should anticipate how known process changes will be considered, respecting the campaign's actual capabilities and available records.

Connect the context to a possible question

We suggest preparing an editorial matrix with three fields: observed interaction, question worth clarifying, and available content to answer it. The question is a working hypothesis. If the company lacks a reliable answer, the next step is to produce or validate information before creating the ad.

Illustrative context

Question to investigate

Possible message direction

Reading a broad service page

What is usually included in the initial assessment?

Explain confirmed customer service stages.

Viewing a product category

How can the available options be compared?

Present a verifiable difference between models.

Watching a demonstration

In which situations can the solution be applied?

Show an illustrative use with its conditions.

Request already received

Which stage was agreed with the team?

Assess whether to continue promotion or stop this message.

This is not a mandatory ad sequence. The matrix helps formulate content that would make sense if the segment and configuration are appropriate. It also prevents every re-engagement message from becoming the same offer with an urgency warning added.

Fictional example: clarify before offering a discount

The fictional company Ativa Oficina promotes restoration of office chairs. Visitors find service examples on the page but may still have questions about assessment. The team considers a message explaining which information helps this initial analysis.

The content would use a labeled simulation, identify required data, and explain the next step. It would not say "we know you want to restore your chairs," because a visit does not confirm that. It would also not advertise a special condition unless one existed.

The hypothesis is to offer an additional explanation relevant to the service. The company would still need to check audience relevance, reach limits, and customer service functionality. This example represents no executed campaign and does not demonstrate that the message would generate a contract.

Check whether the audience is a restriction or a reference

In its instructions for segments in search campaigns, Google distinguishes "Observation," which does not restrict reach, from "Targeting," which restricts delivery to segment members in the described setup. Merely having a segment in the account is therefore insufficient to conclude that the ad is reserved for it. Google Ads: Observation and Targeting

Ask the media professional to explain the chosen campaign type's behavior, including any expansion mechanisms. Also confirm whether platform requirements and applicable policies permit the intended use. Do not transfer instructions between formats without checking.

Review the piece without guessing the visitor's life

  • Is the message based on available, confirmed information?

  • Does the question make sense for the offering?

  • Does the text avoid attributing an undeclared intention to the visitor?

  • Does content add a useful explanation for the stage considered?

  • Does the next step match actual customer service?

  • Has the agency explained who can receive the piece with the chosen settings?

  • Is there a way to review the message when context changes?

Later analysis should consider the campaign's defined objective and measurement limits. Returning to the website does not prove that the ad answered the question; a later purchase should not be explained by a single interaction without proper assessment either. Record the questions the data allows you to investigate.
